Are you crazy enough to go underground? Visit the caves in Hungary.
Ready to make your way through some galleries deep inside the Buda hills? If you are attracted by the underground world, Budapest has more on offer than its three existing metro lines. This city is unique in that it has natural caves, sections of which are open to the public as well. Pálvölgyi stalactite, Szemlohegyi and Mátyás-hegyi caves are on the outskirts of Buda, easily accessible by public transport and by car alike. There are guided tours available, and you don't even need your own helmet and torch, you will be given the necessary equipment on the spot. However, make sure you wear comfortable, safe shoes and outfit for this underground walk. An excellent insight for easygoing beginner cavers!
Caving with a pinch of war history
The castle district with its Castle cave is a potent competitor in luring you down towards the bowels of the earth. The trip, starting from Uri Street just off Szentháromság tér (Trinity Square), will not leave you without a fascinating tale about the history of the cave. You can learn exciting facts such as how some of the halls were used as emergency hospital rooms and some of the corridors as an escape route during wars.
